JAGUAR NEWS

DEAR VCS PARENTS AND FRIENDS,

For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? –  1 Corinthians 12:14-19

Greetings VCS Friends and Family,

This morning I was met with the Friday crowd during homeroom. This is a group of 37 students 7th-12th grade.  What I mean by “Friday crowd,” is that it may often be a little thinner (and that’s okay) due to pre-approved absences. The Friday crowd is often a little quieter, and maybe even just a little bit sleepier also! But they make me smile.

I was reflecting on these students and the unique challenges some may have. I was reflecting on the uniqueness of being in a small school, both elementary and secondary. We are comprised of 66 elementary students, 18 middle school students, and 23 high school students. With these numbers come challenges. We are at times limited as to what activities or extracurricular activities we may be able to participate in. We are at times limited as to what classes we may be able to offer, or how often.  We are limited at times to very small classes and the dynamics (some good, some challenging) that come with those small numbers in the secondary. – Do you hear a “but” coming?

BUT we have a gift. We are unlike many larger Christian schools. We are unlike large public schools. It is to our advantage that we are in a  place of dependence on one another. When you walk the halls and kindergarteners know the names of seniors the picture of what we are about becomes magnified.  Our middle school looks up to the highschool and the highschool needs the middle school. We are not “separate.” We cannot be separate in our building or situation, even if we tried.

Again, closing homeroom, the students gathered in small prayer groups (not a lot of time this morning), and asked for prayer requests and praises.  Sometimes we have more time than others. But seeing this in the morning, and beginning the day this way impacts me. And some days it may  impact me more than the students themselves. It keeps my perspective; it defines my mission; and it encourages me greatly to have the opportunity to see those pockets of the day up close and personally.

We love your kids. Thank you so much for trusting us with them from 8am to 3:10 each day. Those are many, many hours added up throughout the years.  We are humbled. – We pray a blessing on your families, your jobs at home or outside of the home, your travels, the many responsibilities each family has or roles they play within their own world outside of VCS.

Have a blessed weekend.

In Christ,

Kathy Thompson
